First settled by the Dorians in the 9th century BC, Ancient Thira consists of Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine ruins and is an atmospheric and rewarding site to visit. The ruins include temples, houses with mosaics, an agora (market), a theatre and a gymnasium. Views are splendid.  From Perissa, a hike up a dusty path takes a bit over an hour to reach the site.

Located in the central square of Perissa, just above the beach, the church of Holy Cross is among the largest churches in Santorini. It was originally constructed in 1835-1840, but after the severe earthquake of 1956, the church was reconstructed. This reconstruction revealed the foundations of two three-aisled basilicas, which shows that the original church was constructed on top of them. Unfortunately these two basilicas had been totally ruined. Today the church of Holy Cross distinguishes due to its large bell tower, the blue dome and the impressive size. It celebrates on September 14th with a large local panigiri.

At a high altitude of 200 meters on the slopes of Mesa Vouno Mountain, on the southeast coast of Santorini lies the beautiful tiny chapel of Panagia Katefiani. This small church, built on a huge rock, was used in the past as a refuge for the locals in times of war and pirate attack. Set in a fabulous location overlooking Perissa and the south coastline of Santorini, the chapel provides a breathtaking view to the Aegean Sea. Behind the chancel, there is a small cave with an ancient fountain whose water is believed to have therapeutic effects. Panagia Katefiani celebrates on September 8th, the day of Virgin Mary's birthday. It is located on the way from Perissa to Ancient Thira.

The Fira-Oia Hike is a highlight of visiting Santorini. It takes you along the caldera cliff and through the villages of Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Oia.The hike takes between 2 and 4 hours depending on how fast you walk and how often you stop. The hiking trail from Fira to Oia is just under 10kms (6.2 miles). Part of the path is similar to a sidewalk, parts are cobblestone, and parts are a dirt path. There are places to buy drinks along the way but it’s much easier to begin the trip with water and not have to worry about finding an open market.

From Thira to Oia

The red beach is arguably one of the most famous and beautiful beaches of Santorini. It is located only some steps away from the ancient site of Akrotiri. The small size of the beach creates a much crowded atmosphere and there are many days where most of the visitors choose not to make it all the way down to the beach and instead admire this unique landscape of red and black volcanic rocks from the headland.
